Abstract

In cities like Auckland, suburban sprawl has led to the introduction of extensive elevated motorways that create barriers and cuts across the ordering elements of the city. Urban planner Roger Trancik refers to the areas beneath and adjacent to these urban motorways as "lost sites", considered 'unbuildable' even though they occur within the central business district. This research investigation looks at how architecture can help return a sense of place identity and cultural significance to otherwise placeless zones defined by elevated urban motorways. The central Auckland site for this design-led research is the Central Motorway Junction (CMJ), commonly referred to as 'spaghetti junction' -- a site physically and environmentally inappropriate for housing development, but large and high profile enough to contribute significantly to Auckland's 'cultural hub'. The proposed programme for this investigation is a new facility to house Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa's stored collections. Arguably New Zealand's most valuable cultural holdings, only 3% of Te Papa Tongarewa's collections are on display at any time. The rest of the museum's stored collections are completely hidden from public view within its back of house facilities and warehouse structures in Wellington. Due to Wellington's location on major fault lines, studies are underway to permanently move the stored collections to Auckland, where they will remain removed from the public eye. This design-led research investigation proposes that once these collections are relocated to Auckland, if they are made visually accessible to the public, they could provide a vital extension of the cultural hub for the city centre. The investigation proposes to architecturally inhabit one of Auckland's most prominent lost sites, the Central Motorway Junction, in a way that celebrates its iconic elevated motorway as a viable urban context capable of actively contributing to urban re-vitalisation and cultural consolidation. Abstract

Rapid development of hydrofracking, particularly in the Marcellus Shale region, has greatly outpaced ecological research assessing potential impacts on aquatic ecosystems. Increased sedimentation and contamination of streams from unconventional natural gas (UNG) activity could affect stream biota, resulting in altered rates of in-stream leaf decomposition. We deployed leaf packs in seven sites representing a range of UNG activity among different land uses including forest, agriculture, and development. In addition, physical and chemical variables were measured. Summer breakdown rates for all sites, mesh sizes, and leaf species were higher in the presence of UNG activity. Fall breakdown rates demonstrated no consistent trend among land uses or UNG activity. Summer deployment had more storm events than fall, promoting more runoff into streams as well as more sediment release. This suggests that higher physical breakdown rates in UNG sites could have been caused by more disturbed land, modifying stream hydrology. However, fall measurements, under more consistent flow regimes, indicate sites with flashier hydrology are prone to faster breakdown rates due to mechanical fragmentation rather than biological decomposition. Leaf breakdown rates were not a consistent indicator of UNG impairment among our sites due to factors affecting breakdown rates caused by land uses other than UNG and physical breakdown attributed to hydrologic disturbances.

Abstract

The province of Jaen is the most radical example of olive specialization of the world, destining to the olive groves more than 91 % of its agricultural surface. Through cartographic sources of expansion took place from middle of the 20th century is reconstructed, stressing in the spatial keys of a process in which there has predominated the strategy of substitution of other agricultural uses before that the expansion of the agricultural frontier. Likewise, there are identified some of the current characteristics of this extreme monoculture, between them those who allow us to understand its high global productivity (increase of the irrigated surface, take up of soils of better agronomic conditions) or the coexistence of olive groves of very different landscape and economic potential., La provincia de Jaén es el ejemplo más radical de especialización olivarera del mundo, destinando a este cultivo más del 91% de su superficie agrícola. A través de fuentes cartográficas se reconstruye la expansión acaecida desde mediados del siglo XX, reparando en las claves espaciales de un proceso en el que ha predominado la estrategia de sustitución de otros usos agrícolas antes que la expansión de la frontera agrícola. Igualmente se identifican algunas de las características actuales de este monocultivo extremo, entre ellas las que permiten entender su elevada productividad global (incremento de la superficie regada, ocupación de suelos de mejores condiciones agronómicas) o la convivencia de olivares de muy diferente paisajística y potencialidad económica., La province de Jaén est exemplaire dans le monde entier pour son oléiculture, car plus de 91 % de ses terres agricoles sont consacrées à l’olivier. Goff became prosecuting attorney in 1835, served as a Colonel in the Virginia militia in 1844, was superintendent of Randolph County schools in 1853, served as a member of the Virginia Assembly, and was a West Virginia State Senator from Randolph County (1875-1877). The papers include correspondence; land papers, particularly, for Randolph County; court case papers; receipts; bank statements; accounts; and miscellaneous papers concerning the affairs of various clients. A certified abstract to the Felix Snider property of Grant district, Monongalia County, indicating leases of mineral rights, describing location of property and payment of taxes. There is a history of this acreage from when it was patented (1809) by the Commonwealth of Virginia to the heirs of George Snider to the settlement (1930) of the Felix Snider Estate. Included in the abstract are legal actions among the heirs, warranty deeds, plats, and wills. Part of this tract is still owned by the Snider family who have the original 1809 land patent.
